How can computer-aided physiotherapy be used to help people recover? This exciting question formed the framework for the IT project days that Würth IT implemented together with the Initiative Junge Forscherinnen und Forscher e.V. (IJF) at the St. Bernhard school in Bad Mergentheim. A total of 87 pupils from year 8 took part in this forward-looking STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) project, which offered practical insights into the world of programming and IT over two days.
Day 1: Introduction to Python and creative idea development
On 26 November 2024, the project days started with a short company presentation by Würth IT, during which the pupils not only gained exciting insights into the work of the company, but also information about apprenticeships and study opportunities. Afterwards, the trainees and former trainees from Würth IT took over: they introduced the classes to the basics of the Python programming language. With great commitment, the Würth IT employees supported the pupils in creating their first programs.
In the second half of the day, the IJF team took over: the students developed initial ideas for so-called "therapy games", which are designed to promote the recovery of patients through movement and play. The creative approach motivated the participants to design their first prototypes. "It's a great concept and nice to see how your topics create motivation and teamwork," said Sabrina Christof, Head of Young Talents at Würth IT, praising the cooperation.
Day 2: Practical implementation and creative results
The second round took place on 10 December 2024: the students expanded on their ideas and turned them into functioning games using the Scratch programming language. They developed games that can be controlled with self-built controllers - an innovative approach to motivate physiotherapy patients to exercise. The crowning glory was the in-class presentations of the projects, in which the students presented their creative and technically sophisticated results.
Together for the future of STEM
"The collaboration with Würth IT was a complete success. We are delighted with the company's commitment to the project day and the integration of both project partners - a real added value for the pupils at St. Bernhard school. We are already looking forward to the next projects with Würth IT," summarized Pascal Hauser from the IJF. The project days impressively demonstrated how school education and business practice can go hand in hand to inspire young talents for STEM professions.
